[Game Review] Dead Space (Xbox 360)
by John Rogers
Genre: Action / Horror
It's Halloween, which means it's time to go to a haunted house or two, spend Halloween, and play video games scary. There are many games out there that try to scare you, and many (if not most) of them suck. Dead Space, on the other hand, is one of the few games that manages to make it all too well.
Survival horror game for the Xbox 360 was released in October last year, and received extremely positive reviews for most. You may have already read the review Zac prequel to the Nintendo Wii. If you do not check it out here.Considering it was a whole year, you might ask, "Is it still worth playing?" You bet your ass is sweating it. If you want a game that will get your heart beats pounding, your jaw drop and your pants wet, look no further.
Review:
Not many things scare me, especially not video games. I was pleasantly surprised when I started playing Dead Space. From the beginning, I felt a tense and fearing what might already be in the next corner.
You start aboard the USG Kellion a vessel deployed on a repair mission to resolve the Ishimura. The Ishimura is a Cracker "Planet" which was supposed to be mining a nearby planet. Something went wrong on board, however, and a distress signal was sent. When you arrive (via Crash Landing), your team will investigate. Things take a turn for the worse when most of your team members are killed by a repulsive monster, and you separate your two remaining allies.
You will learn the controls early in the game, being introduced to various actions you will. There is nothing wrong with the controls as a whole, but the camera third person may feel a bit awkward in close combat. There is no real heads up display (HUD) in Dead Space. Instead, your health is displayed on your body real characters, and other important information appears in a hologram over your shoulder. This helps give the game a more organic feel, and prevents the screen from becoming too cluttered....
